President Donald Trump’s most trusted associate is now on the record with positive comments about a known pro-Nazi operative.
Senior Adviser Steve Bannon was recently quoted in the international media making approving comments about a historic pro-Nazi philosopher. The Trump team hoped the incident would fly under the radar, but the comments are now being picked up by news organizations around the world.
This is one more piece of information to prove that Bannon holds a deplorable worldview that is racist and anti-Semitic.
The man who Bannon praised, Charles Maurras, is described by analysts as “an infamous anti-Semite, whose anti-Jewish views were central to his outlook.” After WWII, he was sentenced to life in prison for his support of the Nazi regime.
Stephen Bannon, President Donald Trump’s chief strategist, recently spoke approvingly of the ideas of an anti-Semitic French intellectual who was sentenced to life in prison for cooperating with the Nazis during World War II.
In an article on Bannon’s interactions with European right-wing nationalists who want to break apart the European Union, Politico reported last week that Bannon has “expressed admiration for the reactionary French philosopher Charles Maurras, according to French media reports confirmed by Politico.” Recent articles in French media claim Bannon favorably cited Maurras to a French diplomat. Politico describes Maurras as a Catholic nationalist—like Bannon—and notes that Bannon has parroted several of Maurras’ ideas. A hero to members of Europe’s far right, Maurras is a natural fit for Bannon, who has expressed support for Brexit and France’s National Front movement and is known to hate the European Union.
This new development is rightfully causing a major stir online and in the media. The evidence against Steve Bannon is mounting.
He is totally unfit to serve in the federal government in any capacity whatsoever.
That Steve Bannon expresses admiration for the ideas of yet another notorious anti-Semite has ceased to be even a little surprising. That the White House is now crafting budget ideas that dabble in eugenics-based notions of why we ought to stop feeding the elderly and providing healthcare to the sick (under the all-too-familiar banner of military strength and renewed national greatness) is at this point unsurprising as well.
Yes, the occupants of the current White House are crafting polices taken from fascist movements and fascist “thinkers.” All while praising Nazi collaborators, or in some cases while sporting the military medals of those collaborators during public events.
And it’s all right to say this out loud. They’re not attempting to hide it.
