The latest events may go down in history as a major turning point for the United States – it’s the first time in decades that a sitting U.S. president has openly showed support for white supremacists groups.
Americans have been disturbed and angry as we have seen the violent alt-right demonstrations unfolding in Charlottesville and other U.S. cities this summer. Now the situation just got much more disturbing – President Donald Trump issued a statement in which he came very close to giving open approval to the white supremacists.
Following the violence in Charlottesville, various radical hate groups have published comments indicating they see the events as a victory for their movement.
Trump issued a statement about the incidents, but he never actually called out the white supremacists – he just said the whole situation was bad. When racist leaders read Trump’s statement, they knew the president was siding with them.
One of the leaders of the racists’ online misinformation machine published his own response, in which he actually thanked Trump for his support.
“Trump comments were good. He didn’t attack us. He just said the nation should come together. Nothing specific against us. He said that we need to study why people are so angry, and implied there was hate … on both sides! So he implied the antifia are the haters,” racist blogger Andrew Anglin wrote.
He continued, “There was virtually no counter-signaling of us at all. He said he loves us all. Also refused to answer a question about White Nationalists supporting him. No condemnation at all. When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him.”
These remarks ought to be absolutely terrifying for every American who actually values freedom and justice.
What we have here is known white supremacists saying they fully support and appreciate President Trump’s statements in response to the alt-right violent attacks.
Trump has gone too far! He must be removed.
