President Donald Trump sparked international outrage after announcing he has a meeting set up with one of the world’s most brutal and violent leaders.
Trump recently made plans to meet with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who has a long history of violating human rights. Trump has previously praised Duterte, even though the Philippines regime is responsible for thousands of brutal deaths in recent months.
Inside sources say Trump has a great deal of admiration for Duterte, even though he is seen by human rights advocates as a major threat. Now Trump and Duterte are planning to meet face to face next month.
[Trump] finally got a date in his calendar for a face-to-face with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, the leader whose war on drugs has been so extreme and bloody that Human Rights Watch says it may represent a crime against humanity. In fact, one lawyer in the Philippines has already formally accused Duterte of such crimes.
… The meeting will take place Nov. 14 during Trump’s 12-day trip to Asia and Hawaii, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday in a statement. Trump is heading to the Philippine capital of Manila, where Duterte is hosting the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Trump hasn’t criticized the brutal crackdown, estimated to have killed 12,000 in the past 15 months. Indeed, if leaked transcripts are to be believed, he’s heaped praise on the drug campaign to Duterte over the phone.
Trump and Duterte have already interacted via telephone. Earlier this year, Trump hosted a call with the Philippines leader, in which he praised the Philippine government’s ugly killing spree against its own citizens.
“Many countries have the problem, we have the problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that,” Trump said, according to the transcript.
Trump is about to cause irreversible damage to the United States’ world reputation. This is a sad day for our country.
