America’s military veterans have become the most powerful voices against President Donald Trump’s ruthless agenda.
As Trump continues to carry out ruthless attacks against free speech, the Trump agenda is getting slammed by military leaders and veterans. An honored Navy veteran who helped orchestrate the raid on Osama bin Laden has even said Trump’s comments about the press “may be the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.”
What do you think? Is that true?
One thing is for sure – Chancellor Bill McRaven has a unique background. He is a decorated military veteran, but he also studied journalism in college.
This guy understands the importance of a free press and the First Amendment – unlike Trump.
UT System Chancellor Bill McRaven on Tuesday night said President Trump’s recent description of the media as “the enemy of the American people” must be challenged and “this sentiment may be the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.”
McRaven, a retired U.S. Navy admiral, is former commander of the Special Operations Command. He made the comment during the inaugural event of the Communication and Leadership Speaker Series at UT’s Belo Center for New Media. McRaven, who has served as chancellor for two years, is also a UT journalism alumnus. During his lecture, McRaven said the country needs journalists now more than ever before and they must continue to hold others accountable.
Trump on Friday tweeted, “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people! SICK!”
Trump is constantly trashing journalists and making personal attacks, even when the journalists are correct and Trump is wrong. He constantly lies to and about members of the American mainstream media, even though they are highly regarded by others, as McRaven points out.
“I have traveled all around the world. I’ve been to 90 different countries and I have talked to the press in almost every one of those countries. We have the finest press in the world, bar none. Bar none. And it is the single most important institution for this republic,” McRaven told journalism students gathered in Texas, where his is a college administrator, according to Yahoo News.
Trump is getting a lot of criticism lately from veterans and members of the military.
Earlier this year, McRaven took on Trump over his proposed Muslim ban. He issued a statement at the time saying “I believe that the talent, energy, and ideas flowing into the United States of American from countries around the world are among our greatest strengths.”
That is what a true American sounds like. Take notes, Trump!
